Modern landscape design is characterized by a predominance of either alpine or oriental motifs. A possible reason is the craving of modern man for exoticism. Be that as it may, and landscape design does not become less popular, and one of the main means of creating compositions in it is stone.
Trees and bushes, flower groups, lawns – all these, of course, are very important components of landscape design, but, oddly enough, are replaceable. Another thing is stone, a stable component, almost the “soul” of the landscape. Slides and boulders, pools and waterfalls, walls, fences, paths – modern landscape design is simply unthinkable without all this. It is stone that is able to transform and organize space; it seems to be becoming an “immortal” alternative to the seasonal reign of plants. True, not any, but only clearly defined and in place.
Let us together with you consider the most important criteria for choosing a stone for decorating a garden.
First of all, you need to pay attention to the correspondence of the rocks used to the characteristics of the natural biotope. For example, arranging an alpine-style garden involves the use of “constructs” of volcanic origin. Various grottoes, walls, and terraces acquire the greatest naturalness, being created from sedimentary rocks of discreet colors. The channels of imitations of streams and other reservoirs need to be framed by pebbles and boulders washed away by waves.
It is equally important to observe the adequacy of various parameters of the stone to its purpose. Consider the differences in climatic conditions from those in the prototypes of the artificially created landscape. Attention in this context deserves the pools, various waterfalls, fountains and other bodies of water that potentially freeze. Indeed, sometimes even metal structures cannot resist the combination of “moisture and frost”. But the dry stream is an independent and, importantly, aesthetically valuable component of landscape design. Such a landscape is permissible and not very difficult to achieve, it is only advisable to avoid stones, which easily absorb moisture.
Landscaping has one more advantage – it is democratic in the choice of means. Good taste and willingness to work, for the sake of implementing ideas, are no less significant than expensive plants and complex mechanisms. And in any case, you just need to learn to understand the true, natural, beauty of the stone.
