How to save roses in the winter?

Written by Tommy Johnson

The beauty, grace, originality of rose inflorescences attracts more and more flower growers. But the sharply continental climate for these flowers in severe winters is fatal.

The method of shelter depends on the number of plants grown. For solitary, they arrange an individual shelter, and for a large number, if planted in a row, they make tunnel structures with supports between plants. As an insulation material, you can use dry tree leaves (oak trees are especially good), dry peat and even dry soddy soil.

In dry weather, when it gets colder, you should treat the plants with Bordeaux liquid, first remove unopened buds and unripened tops. After drying the bushes, you can begin to shelter them, bending as much as the stems allow it. The bushes are completely covered with leaves. At the same time, the height of the embankment from the soil surface can reach 50-60 centimeters, later the layer will settle. An embankment of peat and dry soil is made 10-15 centimeters high.

At the same time, the root system and renewal buds are located at the bottom of the plant stem. Near the root collar, newspapers and cardboard boxes can be used as a shelter. Sawdust is not recommended. They can subsequently serve as a source of the development of diseases on roses.

After the powder is insulated, cover the roses with spandbond, lutrasil or other breathable material.

Very important! The heater of roses should not be moistened before the onset of stable frosts. Otherwise, kidneys and bark will be warmed up, and this will lead to complete or partial death of plants. In order to avoid heating in rainy weather, buildings should be covered with plastic wrap. With the onset of sustained dry cold weather, polyethylene shelters are removed.

If several rose bushes are planted, you can apply a tunnel frame shelter. Pre-prepare the plants for wintering, as in the first case, we warm the root neck. We place supports in such a way that in winter the snow does not push the shelter. Therefore, from above, over the entire length of the plantings, we lay the rails on the supports installed between the bushes. On the supports, we lay one layer of dense lutrasil, and on it – dense polyethylene.

The ends of such a structure on both sides are left ajar for ventilation. When the temperature drops below minus 8-10 degrees, we close them tightly. With such a dry method of sheltering roses, your favorite flowers will delight you with abundant and lush flowering.

In the spring, as soon as you open the roses, immediately spray them with zircon and cytosine. And roses are very responsive to topdressing solutions, which include mullein. But remember that nitrogen-containing fertilizers reduce winter hardiness, so in August in feed solutions give more potassium and phosphorus. These substances enhance the winter hardiness of plants. This method of shelter can be used for hydrangeas.

I note that the rose garden can become one of the main elements of landscape design, the arrangement of which is better to entrust to a specialist. Then you and your guests will have a great place to relax and have fun.
